Drug addiction and its mechanism

Addiction is an urge or compulsion to repeat a specific habit under any given circumstances. One of the most difficult addictions to quit is drug addiction. Drug addiction is the compulsiveness to use addictive material like narcotics and nicotine. The addicted person knows and is fully aware about the harmful affects of the substance being consumed. And, it is termed as addiction because the users have no control over their actions after a particular point in time.

The most common forms of the drug addictions involve alcohol, tranquilizers and amphetamines and also stimulants like nicotine and caffeine. The nature the drug taken and addicted person differ from person to person and substance. Drugs like alcohol need more exposure for people for to get addicted. But drugs like heroin and cocaine need less exposure as the addiction is fast and gripping.

Drug addiction can be divided into two mechanisms. The physical mechanism the body gets accustomed to the user of the drugs. The abnormal feeling after the discontinuity of the drugs causes withdrawal symptoms. Psychological mechanisms occur when the mind is fully accustomed to reliance on the use of drugs either for pleasure or wants to get rid of emotional pain. People feel that they cannot work under psychological mechanism.

The methods used for the recovery of people who are addicted vary from individual to individual. One of the best ways to cope with an addiction is to go to a rehabilitation centre. The most common methods used are substance rehabilitation programs, counselling and the 12 step recovery technique.
