The actual name for the drug ‘marijuana’ is cannabis. Cannabis has various forms such as ‘ganja’ in herbal form and ‘hashish’ in resinous form. Its historical use spread through the 20th century where it was consumed for spiritual, medicinal, religious and also leisure purposes.

Today, the use of cannabis for drug use is illegal in most parts of the world. Cannabis is known as a psychoactive, addictive drug and this addiction occurs when the physical or mental state of a person is distorted due to its consumption.

Different users may experience different effects in cannabis addiction. Factors such as the potency of the cannabis, its method of consumption and the dose, draw out different levels of ‘highs’ in its addiction. Some short term effects with respect to cannabis use are a feeling of euphoria, intense relaxation, and increased appreciation for music, and either a feeling of intense pleasure or anxiety.

However, other effects include paranoia, troubled concentration, increased heart rate, extreme laziness, inability of motor co-ordination, forgetfulness, spiritual talking and distorted perception. These effects are even more harmful as the problems it will cause to your life on a short term basis may leave a long term trail, with short term memory loss a real possibility.

Cannabis addiction has also been associated with other mental illnesses, from psychotic episodes to clinical schizophrenia.

However, people can get out of cannabis addiction. To overcome it patients need support as well as a sense of commitment and dedication to move out of this addiction.
