Adverse Effects of Drug Addiction on Society

Drug addiction is one of the most pervasive and worrying problems facing countries worldwide. The consequences of drug addiction can be devastating, and can lead to harmful physical and mental effects.

Individuals addicted to drugs may experience depression, fatigue, anxiety and paranoia, and probably a strong desire to take more of the drug to reduce those feelings. Drug addiction can lead to criminal activities, such as prostitution and theft, to raise money to purchase drugs.

Drug addiction also has adverse effects on family and friends. Drug addicts will usually have severe mood swings, which are likely to incur problems at work and at home. Some drug addictions are also associated with violent behaviour, which can cause disruption at work, at home or during recreational time.

Drug addiction affects society in many ways. Crime caused by drug addiction can disrupt the reputation of a neighbourhood and can prove to be a threat to residents. This also means the likelihood of experiencing violence when buying or selling drugs will increase. Drug use via needles can lead to HIV/AIDS and many other fatal illnesses, including blood poisoning.

Without addiction treatment, many people addicted to drugs will stay that way for years and years, forgetting what life was like before the drugs. This in itself can cause serious psychological problems, and can be difficult to reverse. However, given the right treatment and care, most drug addicts can make a full recovery.
