Physical and mental effects of alcohol addiction

Alcohol addiction has adverse effects on mental and physical health. It also has negative effects on the people around you including your family, friends and colleagues. Alcohol addiction can cause severe health problems like cirrhosis of the liver, cancer of the colon, liver, larynx and oesophagus and heart problems.

Alcohol addiction can cause an inability to sit still, shivering, inability to focus on tasks, lack of motivation, slurred speech and disorientation.

Alcohol addiction also has adverse effects on mental and emotional health. The person addicted to alcohol may fear that his or her habit is out of control. They may also be in denial that they have a problem, which can lead to difficulties in relationships. A person addicted to alcohol is likely to feel low, sad or depressed when not drinking alcohol and this can lead to uncontrollable cravings and even aggression. They may become violent is refused alcohol and can end up hurting themselves or those around them.

Alcohol addiction is curable.

The first step to recovery is admitting and understanding that there is a problem. This can sometimes be the hardest stage.

Addiction treatment can be found at treatment centres and clinics, where doctors and other staff are on hand to help you get over your addiction whilst being cared for and looked after.
