Eating Disorder Treatment, Rehabilitation & Recovery Services

Eating disorders affect up to 8% of women and a growing percentage of men in the UK. Though there are different types of eating disorder, if you are a sufferer you will likely have a compulsive relationship with food and be obsessive about your weight.

Many eating disorders mask feelings of low self esteem, a distorted body image or underlying issues of depression. The condition can be triggered by a range of factors, including the death of a loved one, abuse or periods of stress.

However, recovery is possible with the right treatment.

The Causeway Retreat offers an innovative psychological approach to eating disorders. Based on our own private island, your treatment will take place in a unique, therapeutic and tranquil environment that encourages lasting recovery from all types of eating disorder.

Types and symptoms of eating disorders

There are three main types of eating disorder - anorexia, bulimia and binge eating.

Anorexia

Anorexia is an eating disorder where the sufferer becomes obsessed with losing weight, effectively starving themselves to keep their weight down.

Bulimia

A major symptom of bulimia is bingeing on large amounts of food and then purging, usually by being physically sick.

Binge Eating

This type of eating disorder is when the sufferer eats uncontrollably. There is a "binge phase" with bulimia, but this is usually followed by a purge. However, binge eaters are more likely to gorge on food in short bursts and put on excessive weight. This is sometimes known as compulsive eating disorder.

Different types of eating disorder have specific characteristics. However, there are a few common symptoms of eating disorders:

  • Behaving obsessively or compulsively about food,
  • Having a distorted body image and low self esteem,
  • Withdrawing from social contact or lacking confidence,
  • Not eating around people,
  • Mood swings related to eating,
  • Anxiety and depression.

Anorexia and bulimia sufferers may also show the following symptoms of eating disorders:

  • Obsessive exercise regimes,
  • Taking laxatives, diuretics or drinking fluids with lots of caffeine,
  • Vomiting after eating,
  • Dizziness or feeling faint,
  • Suffering abdominal pains, or feeling bloated,
  • Thinning hair.

Eating disorder treatment at The Causeway Retreat

The unique geography and staffing of The Causeway Retreat enables us to offer a complete and effective approach to eating disorder treatment. We have a resident chef, therapists with addiction-based training on-site, and all clients have their own accommodation. Because of this we're able to blend orthodox medical, nutritional and dietary advice with personalised menu selection, individually-supervised eating or informal dining arrangements.

As the island has no shops or supermarkets, binge eaters find it much easier to control food cravings. We're also able to admit male clients, a group most traditional eating disorder clinics struggle to provide for.

Finally, in having an active addictions treatment programme, we are well-equipped to deliver a programme of care to those who view their illness as being caused by an addiction to high-calorie foods.

For saftey reasons, clients requesting treatment for food disorders will undergo a preliminary outpatient assessment and physical examination (including blood tests, electrocardiograph and weighing) with a consultant psychiatrist.

The Causeway Retreat is private, luxurious and, above all, discreet. Take the next step towards arranging your eating disorder treatment by getting in touch with us.

The Causeway Retreat is approved by almost all major insurance companies, such as BUPA, Allianz, Standard Life, Aetna and AXA PPP
